Description
The vascular surgery unit at Uppsala University Hospital is Scandinavia’s largest vascular surgery research group and a leading centre for the management of complex vascular diseases.
The Uppsala vascular team has since 2003 provided a distance course in vascular surgery for trainees and junior vascular surgeons in Sweden. The course runs over 3 years, with 5 meetings annually, resulting in a total of 15 meetings where all the aspects of vascular surgical pathology are covered, with lectures and discussions that are preferably held in Swedish.
Between the meetings, extensive self-studies are included in the form of reading Rutherford's Vascular Surgery and Endovascular Therapy, as well as a large number of key articles that have been distributed as PDFs. The participants analyze the results of various vascular surgery measures at the home hospitals, by evaluating hospital-specific results in Swedvasc, and report the data on the course which is also discussed in the group. The entire subject area of vascular surgery is covered. In addition to the main teachers, vascular surgeons in Uppsala, lecturers from other specialties also participate: interventional radiologists, angiologists, clinical geneticists, neuroradiologists, nephrologists, neurology and stroke medicine, clinical physiologists and anesthesiologists, as well as international lecturers and vascular surgeons from other universities lecture at the training.

Contents
The course is mainly given on site in Uppsala, but once a year it may be relevant for the course to be held on Zoom.
The course runs over 3 years with 5 meetings per year. In connection with one course session per semester, we have a course section called "Uppsala Academic Vascular Grand Round, (UPSILON)" where an internationally renowned colleague is engaged as a lecturer on the topic relevant to the section covered by the course session. Hold this lecture on Zoom for the lecturer while the course participants are gathered in Uppsala. An important part of this is that the participants have prepared questions for the lecturer. In addition to the course participants, vascular surgeons who have completed the distance education previously (approx. 120), participants in the Uppsala vascular surgery research group and the colleagues at the participants' home clinics are invited to participate via Zoom.
Instructions
In order to pass the course, at least 80% participation is required.
Participants are expected to be well read and active during the lectures. Course literature instructions are sent out at least 2 months before each meeting.
Prerequisites for starting the training are that one's boss:
1) Guaranteed leave at all educational opportunities (15). We plan the meetings at least 6 months in advance, so there can be no problem with the scheduling.
2) High attendance. Participation in a minimum of 12/15 meetings, (80%) is required for approval
3) The home clinic covers travel costs, one overnight stay/year and purchase of the Rutherford course book.
Examination
After each course, an MCQ examination is held with 2-3 questions per lecture. This results in between 8-15 questions per time. The questions are made available in connection with the end of the course session and the participants have until the following Tuesday to answer them. The answers will be reported at the next course session.
Literature
Rutherford's Vascular Surgery and Endovascular Therapy, as well as a large number of key articles distributed as PDFs.
