• Understand the purpose of each section in a research paper
• Understand how online platforms have changed the way research papers are disseminated
• Better understand how to report methodology as well as research findings
• Be able to make strategic choices about how, where and when to publish research
• Understand the qualitative manuscript writing process and how to assess the quality of qualitative research

Contents

• Exercises to help students identify the most publishable elements of their research
• Abstract writing
• Advice on how to identify and profile the best and most suitable journals for publication
• A section-by-section guide to what is expected in each part of a typical research article
• A guide to using EQUATOR (for example, CONSORT, STROBE, COREQ) in qualitative and quantitative study designs and manuscript preparation
• Ethics in publication
• A guide to searching, accessing, retrieving, and reading scientific research articles online
• A guide to using references
• A step-by-step guide for writing and reviewing qualitative manuscripts

Instructions

Lectures, interactive discussion seminars, review- and writing exercises.
This popular course takes a step-by-step approach to guiding participants through the process of writing research articles based on mixed-methods research principles and article publication in quality journals. The course provides an editor’s perspective on how students can improve their research writing to enhance the chances of publication and citation. The course takes a practicality-oriented, skills-based approach to dealing with the challenges new authors are faced with, starting with the basics of identifying the parts of research which are best suited to be published in article form, to finding good quality journals for publication as well as the ability to write with clarity for maximum impact.

Students must prepare an Abstract based on their draft manuscript and upload it on Studium at least a week before the start date. They are further required to visit the EQUATOR (Enhancing the QUAlity and Transparency of health Research) network website (http://www.equator-network.org/) and read the reporting guidelines relevant to their study type as well as the guidelines for observational studies (STROBE).

Examination

In order to meet the course requirements the student is expected to be present in all scheduled lectures, group discussions, and to actively participate in the group work for Abstract writing and the subsequent general discussions. Students are expected to complete mandatory reading and writing assignments. Unauthorized absence from any of the scheduled events will lead to failure to pass the course.

Literature

The reading materials will be evidence based documents and peer reviewed selected articles relevant to the course.
