Description

Description: This course gives a broad overview of different types of intellectual property (IP) and how they can be used to add commercial value to research outcomes, from describing impact in grant applications to licensing and creating innovations and value to society. It will also provide tools for finding useful information from patents in your research area as well as for structuring and presenting research outcomes from an impact point of view. The course consists of four half-day seminars given by Uppsala University Innovation in collaboration with the Swedish Patent and Registration Office (Patent & Registreringsverket, PRV).
Credits: 3 ECTS (hp). The course is open to PhD students and employees.

Learning outcomes

Upon completion of the course you should
- understand the basic concepts and forms of IP
- be able to find, evaluate and identify technical information from patent literature within your research area
- have learned a method to identify, categorize and evaluate intellectual assets within a research project
- have gained knowledge of some tools for structuring and presenting research outcomes from a commercial / societal impact perspective

Contents

Seminar 1: The IP tool box
This seminar will provide an introduction to different types of IP and how they are relevant to academic research. You will get an overview of the international systems relevant for patents, trademarks, copyright and industrial design. In addition we will discuss how to protect a product or idea using various types of IP.

Seminar 2: Patents and patent information
This seminar will provide basic knowledge about the patent system: what a patent is, what can be patented and what the benefit of a patent is. Additionally, the seminar will give you insights into patent databases and how to search for patent information, and how to find and interpret relevant technical and legal information from the patent literature.

Seminar 3: Identifying & generating value from intellectual assets
This seminar will take a closer look at the role IP plays in a research setting, what the “teacher´s exemption / professor´s privilege” really means and what support is available if you would like your research results to have an impact beyond academic publications. You will also be presented with a method to perform an inventory of intellectual assets in a project, as well as a number of examples of how IP can be used to generate value.

Seminar 4: Transforming knowledge into practice
This seminar will give a practical overview of some useful tools for structuring and presenting research outcomes from a commercial perspective or with regard to other types of societal impact. The tools include the Impact Planning Canvas, Lean Canvas and SRI NABC methods.
