Description

The course is compulsory for PhD students who carry out procedures on laboratory animals or have such experiments described in the thesis (according to Function A; 2010/63/EU).
The online contents gives you species specific theoretical knowledge specific to rodents and lagomorphs. The completion of the online edcuation is a prerequisite for access to train your practical skills. The contents of the practical part of the education is set to an agreed minimun level of competence, decided by the board of the Nordic consortium for laboratory animal science.
After passing the practical assessment you have acquired basic knowledge and skills in laborotary animal science to work under supervision. Continuous training and education is a must to achieve a level of competence where you may work independently with laboratory animals.

Learning outcomes

This online education in Laboratory Animal Science aims to comply with EU and Swedish legislation regarding the protection of animals used for research purposes. The overall ILO of this course is that the participant will:

• interpret and practice the Swedish legal requirements regarding the use of laboratory animals (EU Module 1)
• know and apply the principles of the 3R's, animal welfare and ethical argumentation concerning research animals (EU Module 2)
• know and apply basic species specific biology and physiology of the research animals covered in the course (EU Module 3.1 - EU Module 3.2 is practical skills)
• know and apply the fundamental principles of research animal housing, enrichment, care and health monitoring (EU Module 4)
• know and interpret healthy animal behaviour and recognise pain, suffering and distress; describe pain assessment and the possibility of objective pain scoring (EU Module 5)
• know and apply the fundamental principles of euthanasia, differentiate between end-points, describe different methods of euthanasia and how they apply to different types of animals and life stages (EU Module 6.1 - EU Module 6.2 is practical skills)
• know the fundamental principles of carrying out procedures in a way that causes the least stress and harm to an animal, relating how procedures may affect the animal's physiology and thereby the researh results (EU Module 7)
• apply the fundamental principles of carrying out procedures in a way that causes the least stress and harm to an animal. Be aware of, and minimise the risks associated with different procedures, and interpret signs of an unsuccessful procedure (EU Module 8)
