Beskrivning

Description: The course gives a broad overview of different types of intellectual property (IP) and how it can be used to add commercial value to research outcomes, from describing impact in grant applications to licensing and creating startups. It will also provide tools for finding useful information from patents as well as for structuring and presenting research outcomes from a commercial point of view. The course includes four seminars given by the Swedish Patent and Registration Office (Patent & Registreringsverket, PRV) and UU Innovation.
Credits: 3 ECTS (hp). The course is open to PhD students and employees.

Inlärningsmål

Upon completion of the course you should
- understand the basic concepts and forms of IP
- be able to find, evaluate and identify technical information from patent literature within your research area
- have gained knowledge of some tools for structuring and presenting research outcomes from a commercial point of view
- understand how to identify and protect IP assets within a project

Innehåll

Seminar 1: Basic IP knowledge
This seminar will provide an introduction to different types of IP and how they are relevant to academic research. There will be an overview of the international systems relevant for patents, trademarks, copyright and industrial design and a discussion on how to protect a product or idea using various types of IP.
Seminar 2: Finding useful information from patents
This seminar will give you insights into patent databases and how to search for patent information, finding and interpreting relevant technical and legal information from the patent literature.
Bring your laptop. This seminar includes a practical search session.
Seminar 3: Tools for communicating research outcomes
This seminar will give a practical overview of some useful tools for structuring and presenting research outcomes from a commercial point of view. The tools include e.g. the SRI NABC method, Business Model Canvas / Lean Canvas and Technology Readiness Levels.
Seminar 4: Commercialization of research outcomes
This seminar will give an overview of different aspects of commercialization of research outcomes, and how an inventory of IP assets within a project can be performed. Information about the innovation support available from UU Innovation will also be presented.

Examination

To pass the course you need to
- be present at all four seminars
- complete the three assignments listed below (more detailed instructions to be provided in the seminars).

Assignment 1
Select an appropriate database with patent content and make a search in your research area. Locate four relevant full text patents.
1. Read and summarize the technical content in your own words for each patent (1/2 – 1 A4 page in total for the four patents).
2. For each patent: refer to the patent correctly, give an account for the patent family size and note the extent of subsequent patent documents which cite the patent as prior art.
3. Indicate which database you retrieved the information from and include a brief description of keywords/patent classification codes you used to find the patent documents.
4. Describe the legal status on the level of application/granted patent for the complete patent family.
Note: If you have a research area where patents are of minor relevance contact the course responsible for guidance.
Assignment 2
Prepare an “NABC” document for a project in your research area. The NABC should be 1-2 pages and be written with the intent of attracting a potential investor. Special focus should be given to the N, B and C sections.
Assignment 3
Prepare an inventory of the different types of IP that are created in a research project, how the IP potentially could create value and impact, and how you should or could protect the IP. The project description does not need to be detailed or include specific results/inventions, but should focus on the types of IP that can create value in the project as well as associated weaknesses of the IP.

Litteratur

Will be provided during the course and consists of selected documentation and handouts related to the seminar presentations.
